Home Theatre & Stereo Systems: How It Works and How to Build One
Most of us envisioned a home relaxation wherein you can fully immerse in the technological joy. It may be a blockbuster Hollywood movie, the latest tear-jerking Korean series, the graphics-rich Ghost of Tsushima game or a high-end audio San Francisco or New York music label has to offer. The best way to enjoy all of that is to have a home theatre system.
Before we discuss how home theatre works, we will have to understand how an audio system becomes great. There are 2 basic audio systems: mono, the system that uses one channel, and stereo, the system that uses two. The channels are the audio signals being converted to electricity through a sound component like an amplifier.
In mono systems, a single speaker is enough to output the entirety of the audio signal. In stereo systems, at least two speakers are needed wherein the entire audio signal is being ‘technically divided’ into two complementing signals. The purpose of this is that one signal is meant for one side of the ear, and the complementing signal is for the other side.
The different signals are received by the brain and will give a ‘surrounding’ effect. That is why, when you play a song and listen to your earphones or in home stereo systems, it feels as if that a soundtrack is ‘playing’ for a moment in the background. It is similar to a movie scene and stimulates many emotions and thoughts.
What Is Home Theatre
A home theatre is only possible because of the invention of stereo systems. That feeling brought by the devices can truly make a great experience. A home theatre system aims to replicate the atmosphere of a movie theatre within the convenience of your house.
To simplify, it works similarly to a normal entertainment set-up. The only difference is how the audio and video are being magnified so that you can immerse yourself in enjoyment under the limitations of your room capacity. Here are the four components you need and the devices you have to select to create a home theatre:
1. Input Devices
a.
DVD
player capable of playing Blu-ray
b.
Gaming
consoles
c.
High-performance
computer
d.
Smartphone

e.

2. Audio/Video Receivers

Television with at least a 1080p resolution
b.

4.

How To Build a Home Theatre & Stereo System
It is fairly easy to build a home theatre system. Out of the four components, the determining factor is the audio output device such as the speakers. The capability and placement of the speakers will affect the overall experience.
The typical stereo set-up has one speaker on the left and other on the right. Nowadays, there are improved varieties like ‘5.1’ or ‘7.1’. The ‘5’ and ‘7’ signifies the number of speakers where the audio signal is optimally divided into channels. Since it is an odd number, one of them is the central speaker, where it can function as a ‘left’ or ‘right’ speaker at alternating times.
The ‘.1’ refers to the subwoofer, a type of speaker that outputs the lowest frequencies of sound or commonly called ‘bass’. Since this sound is distinct at such frequencies, there is no need to ‘technically divide’ it; instead, the 5.1 and 7.1 stereo set-up isolates the bass audio from the division of channels.
Of course, the surrounding effect can only be achieved if the files from the input devices are manufactured to be capable of such surround stereo audio. It has to be at least a Blu-ray DVD, one of the premium streaming platforms or a high-end audio San Francisco or New York vibes can provide.
Conclusion
If you want to increase the immersive feeling, you can invest in soundproofing. A home theatre system is not cheap to build because of the rates of the devices. However, once it is set up, each moment of relaxation can be a great experience.
